I Love Mumbai, not just an institution... a way of life-Part 1

Gateway of India, Mumbai.

I Love Mumbai, not just an institution... a way of life-Part 1

I came to Indonesia in 2004 and have been travelling extensively throughout the country and as well as the neighbouring countries.  I will write about my experiences and travelling adventure in South East Asia in my other post. As I am new to the forum and this is my first post, I will dedicate this post to my birth Country India. I was born in Mumbai, India.

Mumbai, formely Bombay, is the capital of the Indian state of Maharashtra and the financial capital of India. With a population of approximately 13.66 million it is the second most populous city in the world.  Mumbai lies on the west coast of India and has a deep natural harbour. Mumbai's port handles over half of India's maritime cargo.
Mumbai is the commercial and entertainment centre of India. Mumbai is one of the world's top ten centre’s of commerce by global financial flow,  home to important financial institutions such as the Reserve Bank of India, the Exchange the National stock Exchange  of India and the corporate headquarters of many Indian companies and numerous multinational corporations. The city also houses India's Hindi film and television industry, known as Bollywood. Mumbai's business opportunities, as well as its potential to offer a better standard of living, attract migrants from all over India and, in turn, make the city a potpourri of many communities and cultures.
My Father was in Navy and I had an opportunity to stay at the best place in Mumbai.I was Staying in Navy Nagar, Colaba (South Bombay). Colaba was near to many great places and landmarks in Mumbai.I will never forget the rides in Double Decker bus to my college and other activities.
Mumbai has many majestic buildings. Gateway of India was only 15 minutes from my house. I use to hang out with my friends in Gateway and the surrounding areas after my college Hours and usually on Saturday and Sundays.
Colaba is termed as the 'Culture Square' of Mumbai . The architecture of the area is reminiscent of the old Bombay, fact highlighted by buildings like, National Gallery of Modern Art , Regal Cinema, Prince of Wales Museum  and Khushrow Baug , a Parsi residential colony, built in 1934, covering an area of 84,000 square yards, which home to over 500 families .

Among the restaurants, cafes and roadside eateries that make the street popular with tourists and locals alike are, Piccadilly restaurant, Cafe Churchill, Mings Palace, Kailash Parbat, Cafe Mondegar and the Cafe Leopold, founded by Iranians in 1871.
Café Mondegar was my personnel favorite and of course Iranian restaurants for yummy Chicken and Roti. I use to love watching movies at Regal cinema. We use to bunk from college to see the latest films. Matinee show was very popular among college going students.
Kailesh parbat hotal was famous for Indian junk food and I use to go there quite often to have Mouth watering dishes like Pani puri and falooda Ice-cream. As I was student of fine arts I loved to visit National Gallery of Modern Art to get inspired and see latest paintings.
Colaba Causeway is a prime spot of vibrant tourist activities. Colaba Causeway is a dynamic shopping suburban area also, visited by all shopping tourist freaks. All varieties of clothing materials, electronics equipments, Indian and imported high values items and cosmetics are available plenty in the shops of Colaba Causeway. When you visit Mumbai, do not forget to shop at Colaba Causeway.
Church of St John the Evangelist (Afghan Church) and the Sassoon Dock are main tourist attractions in this area. Work on the church of St. John the Evangelist was begun in 1847. The church is now known as the Afghan Church, after the First Afghan War of 1838. It was consecrated in 1858 and work on the steeple was concluded in 1865.
One more attraction is The Elephanta Caves are located just off Mumbai harbor in the Gharapuri Island also called Elephanta Island - a name given by the Portuguese when they ruled over this area. In 1987, the caves were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Hewn out of solid rock, the Elephanta Caves date back to 600 AD. The caves attract many visitors who take an hour long ferry boat ride to reach from Gateway of India. The cave complex is a collection of rock-cut architecture with stone sculptures of Hindu Gods and Goddesses…….. (To be continued)

No Not at all. Mumbai is very modern. Infact it is very safe for women to travel. India is very much safe to travel. I feel for women to travel alone to any part of the world is not safe.

Ofcourse I was only 20. So I have to look differentSmile

All the places I mentioned is worth visiting in Mumbai. I will mention about many other places in my next post (part-2) of my story. If you are mentioning about only India than there are so many places to visit. Like China India is huge. You should atleast have 3 months to see whole of India.

Mumbai is in west of India. There is so much to see in North, south and east also with different culture and climate.

Namaste Mr Sanjay,

I am thinking about traveling to India soon with my lovely hubby. I have used the currency converter to find out how much a US dollar is worth in India, But what I need to find is more information on what can a Rupee buy? I need to know how much things are worth. A hotel, food, fun activities, anything... Can u help?

I saw in the TV Look like Mumbai is glamour city of India, How to find the good spot of hang out zone and night life activity in mumbai..cause I might regain my energy on the dance floor after whole day traveling.

XOXOXO
