Surabaya: City of Heroes

“City of Heroes” People named it because of its role in the nation's independence struggle for Indonesia. Surabaya is the second largest city in the country which is the capital state of East Java. The city takes important role in economic prosperity of the country, served for over half a millennium as trading port for the inland empires of Java. The history was started at the mouth of the Brantas River, officially founded as a city in 1923 by Raden Widjaja, the king of Majapahit Kingdom, the most glorious empire in Indonesia at that time.

The site of a legendary battle between a shark (sura) and crocodile (baya) was background name of the Surabaya. The statue of shark and crocodile are represented the symbol of the city, the two facing each other while circling the city's monument, the Tugu Pahlawan (Heroes' monument).

Located at the equatorial region, Surabaya has only two dominant seasons, the wet and the dry. December to January is the best time to visit Surabaya when the temperature over there is quite moderate. Surabaya gives some of interesting places which easy to reach, such as: Mpu Tantular Museum, the People's Amusement Park, Surabaya Harbor, Tugu Pahlawan Monument, Museum of Sepuluh November and Surabaya's Zoological Garden.

 

 

The icon places in Surabaya:

- Zoological Garden of Surabaya has rare of variety in species of animal. From Komodo dragons to Orang Utans can be seen here. There are some of the rarest species of animals and reptiles that are to be found in the same garden in Surabaya.

- Jembatan Merah area, on this area exists some of old houses belonging to the Dutch reign which provides a sharp contrast to the new buildings.

- Tunjungan Plaza is a mall that usual purpose on hanging out center when the nightfall and night life in Surabaya comes alive.

- The Pasar Pabean area is a place with many choices of shops. There are malls as well for the tourists who come here for the sole purpose of shopping to their heart's content.

One place is never forgotten and recommends head toward Kalimas Surabaya’s old harbor. Have a look and be a witness for the colorful Bugis schooners or “Phinisi” ship. It has sailed Indonesia’s seas over hundred of years.

If still have many stocks of time, go across the Strait Madura, it’s only half an hour by ferry from Surabaya to Madura Island which is famous for its unique bull races held each year after the harvest season. In addition, the bridge of “Suramadu” will be connected between Surabaya and Madura is being set up to be built. The plan is well on its way and very soon there will be a bridge connecting the two lands and this will be a very big help and great access to the people living here to increase their life, both of side, Surabaya – Madura.

How to get there?

As the second largest city in Indonesia, Surabaya is easy to reach. Many airlines provide the flight to this city from other cities in Indonesia or International flight too. Arrived at Juanda Airport in Surabaya, the buses and taxi are available to take the visitors downtown. It’s about 30 minutes.
