Kaliurang lies at the slope of mount Merapi – an active volcano. It is a small town, that famous as a resort town in central of Java, 28 kilometers from Yogyakarta, Indonesia. This place is very comfortable for those who are seeking refuge and tranquility amidst the lush green tropical splendor.

Kaliurang is also popular as a destination on weekend for visitors from Yogyakarta. Attractions include the cool air, views, and an extensive forested park with trails. The town charges a small admission fee to visitors, paid at a booth on a busy main road.

On holidays, many people visit this resort town. Boy scouts and young persons enjoy camps on a camping site and go to places for mountaineering. Those who like mountain climbing can hike Merapi Mountain from Kaliurang. Climbers usually start the journey after one night staying in the town. Early morning, they climb Merapi via Kinahrejo village to descend again at noon.

The place has some of important role in Central of Java. In history, Kaliurang was as the location for a negotiation meeting between Dutch and Indonesians in the 1940s, when the houses and holiday homes owned by the Sultanate of Yogyakarta were utilized. Beside that, Kaliurang has been an important base for vulcanologists in their monitoring of eruptions of Merapi, especially when the southern slopes of the volcano become active.

The best mountain view is in the morning before nine o’clock, after sunrise. If lucky, when the weather is clear, the panorama of nature surrounds with forest of Plawangan and Kaliurang, and the rolling green countryside looks amazing.

To get the Kaliurang is easy. The town can be access from many cities in Central Java, especially from Yogyakarta.
